I'm the person behind Petalume. Here's how a little experiment with wax flowers became something much more than I expected.
By day, I work in IT, but outside of work I've always loved doing something creative. Whether it's painting, making balloon sculptures or spending time in my garden, I enjoy making things with my hands.
I've always loved flowers too. Their colours, different shapes and, of course, their beautiful fragrances.
That love of flowers and a bit of creative curiosity led me to try making flowers out of scented wax. I started experimenting with different colours and arrangements, just to see what I could create.
I had no idea where that little experiment would lead!
The birthday gift that started it all
One of my first floral arrangements was a gift for a good friend's birthday. I made it in salmon pink because I knew that was her favourite colour. I wanted to give her something personal, made especially for her.
Seeing how much she loved it meant so much to me. The other guests at the party were really encouraging too. They admired the flowers, asked questions and shared such lovely feedback.
Until then, I'd just been enjoying the process of making wax flowers. But that day made me wonder whether other people might enjoy receiving something like this too.
That's where the idea for Petalume began.
Why I love making handmade gifts
I've always loved making things for other people. There's something different about a handmade gift. You choose the colours, put the details together and spend time thinking about the person who's going to receive it.
And no two handmade arrangements turn out exactly the same. I love that part.
Today I make scented wax flower arrangements as decorative gifts. They're now crafted without wicks, purely for display, never to be lit or melted. I enjoy trying new ideas and working out how colours, shapes and fragrances can come together.
